Pay Registration Deposit

Before you can officially add any classes, you'll need to pay the $250 registration deposit. As soon as you're sure you're coming to Southern Virginia, pay the deposit to reserve your place in the classes you want.

Fill out the Registration Questionnaire

During your first year at Southern Virginia, you'll be assigned to a learning community, a small supportive group of other first-year students with similar interests. The Registrar will add you to two core classes with your learning community.

The registration questionnaire is used to decide which learning community will be the best fit for you.

Sign up for Courses

Once you have a mysvu login and you've paid your registration deposit, you're ready to add courses to your schedule. Use the course search feature to find the courses that fit your interests and will move you toward graduation.

If you have questions about which courses you should add, contact the registrar's office at 540-261-8408 or or ask the registrar how to contact your academic advisor for more help. After you add courses, your academic advisor will have to approve your schedule.

Submit Official Transcripts

After you graduate from high school, you'll need to submit an official copy of your final transcript to Southern Virginia. If you're a transfer student, you should submit an official copy of your transcript once you finish the last semester you study at another school. Official transcripts should be mailed directly to:

Pay Housing Deposit

Once you've decided to live on campus, pay the $250 housing deposit to reserve your place. Students who qualify to live off campus and choose to do so don't have to pay this deposit. All single students are encouraged to live on campus.

If you have already paid your deposit, you will not be able to access the payment portlet. Instead, continue on to the Housing Application.

Fill out the Housing Application

After you pay your housing deposit, you can submit an housing application. This application is used by the housing office to assign you a room and roommates. You will also choose a meal plan in the application.

Complete and Submit the FAFSA

In order to receive financial aid, you'll need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA. Unless you're financially independent, you'll probably need tax information from your parents or guardians in order to complete the FAFSA. You can choose not to submit a FAFSA, but then you won't be able to receive any financial aid from the federal government. When you finish the FAFSA, be sure to send the results to Southern Virginia University. If you're not going to submit the FAFSA please let us know (

Sign and Return Your Awards Letter

After we receive the results of your FAFSA, the financial services office will determine what kind of scholarships and aid you're qualified to receive and send you an awards letter with all the details of your financial aid. As soon as you receive your award letter, sign it and return it to the financial services office in order to accept your financial aid.

Make Financial Arrangements

Once you've accepted your financial aid package, you need to make financial arrangements. Making financial arrangements involves:

  • choosing a payment plan
  • making any necessary payments

The financial services office will reach out to you to help you make financial arrangements, or you can reach out to them.

Register for Orientation

All new students should plan on attending Fall 2016 Orientation on Aug. 25 - 27. Orientation will help you slide right into life at Southern Virginia and prepare you for success in your classes.

Purchase Textbooks

After you've finalized your course schedule, you'll need to purchase textbooks. We have an agreement with Follett Higher Education Group to provide textbooks for our students. You can purchase textbooks online or at the Follett Bookstore on campus.

Register for Institute

All students are encouraged, but not required to take classes at the Latter-day Saint Institute of Religion on campus. Students can transfer up to 8 institute credits to Southern Virginia as elective credit.

Submit Student Health History

In order to prepare us and authorize us to administer medical care in case of an emergency, you'll need to fill out this health history form. Download the form and follow the instructions to submit it to the university.

Register Vehicle

If you own a vehicle, you'll have to register it in order to park on campus. After you arrive on campus, you can pick up a parking tag for your registered vehicle at the Office of Public Safety and Security.

Reserve Shuttle

If you plan on arriving at the Roanoke Airport, Southern Virginia provides a shuttle to campus for a $45 fee. Space on the shuttles must be reserved online before August 23.
